Book Review: Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible

Jay Adams' book Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible offers a powerful, Biblically grounded presentation of these hotly debated topics within the Christian community.

Adams' innovation is essentially to link Matthew 18 and 19 together, challenging the flawed, but commonly held view that "infidelity is grounds for divorce."  By linking the concept of Church Discipline (Matthew 18) with Divorce (Matthew 19), Adams' faithfully presents divorce as the consequence of what it really is: the result of unrepentance and hardness of heart... which is why Moses allowed the Israelites to divorce in the wildnerness.

By integrating Church Discipline with Divorce, Adams constructs and suggests a "system" by which the Church can help resolve marital conflict and difficulties.  This system of "divorce discipline" also helps call and equip churches and pastors for the ministry of marital reconciliation.

I don't entirely agree with Adams' view on the unforgivable sin, but I don't entirely reject it either.  I don't think his view either adds nor subtracts from his overall presentation.

I recommend this book for all Christians, since the issue of marriage and divorce is so prevalent in our daily interactions and ministries.  It is a short, but easy read... less than 100 pages.
