What is the Significance of Adam Naming Eve?
Question:
What is your take on why Eve was not named until after the Fall?
Response:
I have a few responses to this question:
1. Adam names Eve the Mother of all the Living. This implies that Adam is the Father of all the Dead.
2. Adam’s naming Eve establishes dominion over her. This is likely somehow related to Genesis 3:16… “Your desire shall be for your husband but he will rule over you.”
3. Some argue that this demonstrates that their marriage is somehow restored, in a parallel to Genesis 2:23-25, where Adam names the Woman, “Woman” and says that for this reason a man should leave his father and mother, etc… and they were naked and unashamed. The problem with the idea of marital restoration is that its clear they were ashamed of their nakedness and God needed to replace their fig leaves with animal skins. So, I am not so sure the marriage is restored, particularly based on what Adam said in 3:12 and the view that marriage is itself an Image of God, which we discussed.
4. This is the last time Adam says anything. After Genesis 3:20, Eve is the one speaking in later texts. Adam is ominously silent.
5. As we look at the Cain and Abel narrative, I think that you will realize that Eve’s offspring are the living ones… in this life and the next.
I hope this is helpful. In Christ, Marty
