Hebrew Language Resources

Here are some resources that I recommend for learning Biblical Hebrew. I really wish that someone had given me the "low-down" when I started, since it would have saved me some time and money. As an FYI, I link to Amazon for most books (for convienence), but I would suggest that you check out Christianbook Distributors at www.christianbook.com for Greek and Hebrew resources (its probably cheaper than Amazon).

First of all, to learn Biblical Hebrew, you need a grammar, workbook, vocabulary cards, grammar reference sheet, and basic vocabulary guide.    For the beginning student, I recommend Dr. Gary Pratico's set of educational materials, which I have listed below:

After you get some comfort working with the Hebrew text, the next purchase is a decent lexicon. The best lexicon is the Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (HALOT).  Unfortunately, HALOT is expensive, but if you have decided that Hebrew study is important to you, it really is the best way to go.  Another good choice is Hollaway's A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament.

After you finish your first two semesters of Hebrew(ie - finished the basic grammar and workbook), you will want to start working with the original Hebrew text.  I recommend first purchasing a Hebrew reader and then later a copy of the Hebrew Bible (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) in order to start working with the original language text.

This is not an exhaustive list of Hebrew resources, but its enough to get you started and through the first year or two of Hebrew study.

If you want to take a "formal" program, Gordon Conwell offers a video-based course that you can take for credit or for fun.  This class is taught by Dr. Pratico and if you take it for credit, it should be accepted by any ATS accredited seminary.

I hope those of you choosing to pursue Hebrew studies find this helpful, Marty

I have been working through Pratico and Van Pelt's grammar in addition to the Semlink video lectures from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Both are very well done. Dr. Pratico is an excellent teacher. I highly recommend both of these resources for anyone wishing to learn Hebrew on their own.
